چکیده

We introduce the theory of strong homotopy types of simplicial complexes. Similarly to classical simple homotopy theory, the strong homotopy types can be described by elementary moves. An elementary move in this setting is called a strong collapse and it is a particular kind of simplicial collapse. The advantage of using strong collapses is the existence and uniqueness of cores and their relationship with the nerves of the complexes. From this theory we derive new results for studying simplicial collapsibil-ity with a different point of view. We analyze vertex-transitive simplicial G-actions and prove a particular case of the Evasiveness conjecture for simplicial complexes. Moreover, we reduce the general conjecture to the class of minimal complexes. We also strengthen a result of V. Welker on the barycentric subdivision of collapsible complexes. We obtain this and other results on collapsibility of polyhedra by means of the characterization of the different notions of collapses in terms of finite topological spaces.

Diphtheritic polyneuropathy: clinical analysis of severe forms.

BACKGROUND Diphtheritic polyneuropathy (DP) is a dangerous complication of diphtheria, especially its severe forms with bulbar, respiratory tract, and circulatory disturbances. However, the clinical picture of severe forms of DP is practically unknown. OBJECTIVE To investigate the clinical features and peculiarities of the course of severe forms of DP. PATIENTS Thirty-two patients with seve...

Structural changes after transmitter release at the frog neuromuscular junction

The sequence of structural changes that occur during synaptic vesicle exocytosis was studied by quick-freezing muscles at different intervals after stimulating their nerves, in the presence of 4-aminopyridine to increase the number of transmitter quanta released by each stimulus. Vesicle openings began to appear at the active zones of the intramuscular nerves within 3-4 ms after a single stimul...

A Geometric Perspective on Sparse Filtrations

Nerve complexes are discrete structures used for computing topological information about a continuous space, but they often suffer from exponential blowup in size. Sparsifying these complexes allows one to retain most topological information while maintaining a significantly smaller complex. We present a geometric perspective on sparse filtrations, viewing them as a nerve of geometric cones, ra...

Regulation of motoneuron excitability via motor endplate acetylcholine receptor activation.

Motoneuron populations possess a range of intrinsic excitability that plays an important role in establishing how motor units are recruited. The fact that this range collapses after axotomy and does not recover completely until after reinnervation occurs suggests that muscle innervation is needed to maintain or regulate adult motoneuron excitability, but the nature and identity of underlying me...
